Deze plaats ligt in het afgelegen Kaokoland, het leefgebied van de nog traditioneel levende Himba. De Himba zijn vooral bekend omdat zij hun haar, lichaam en leren omslagschorten insmeren met een mengsel van rode aarde en dierlijk vet. Schijnbaar onaangetast door westerse invloeden houden zij trots vast aan hun traditionele nomadische wijze van leven. Iedere familie woont in een kraal waarbinnen verschillende hutten worden gebouwd van een geraamte van takken afgesmeerd met mest.
